in late nineteenth/ early twentieth centuries in his short story "The Doll." Examination of these stories indicates similarities, yet also distinct differences between two ethnic groups who have been oppressed
within the context of American culture and history. In an interview with Juan Bruce-Novoa, Tomas Rivera once commented that he saw "a lot of suffering and much isolation of
the people" and that he saw "a lot of heroic people" and, therefore, "wanted to capture their feelings" (Glencoe Literature Library study guide 9). Certainly, conveying the feelings of his
young protagonist is the central feature of Riveras short story, as it basically records the origin of the boys alienation and anger toward society and towards God. The story
opens with the unnamed protagonist recalling the hatred and anger he felt when his aunt and uncle became ill and then died of tuberculosis. It is clear that his anger
comes from his intense feelings of frustration and helplessness because he cannot do anything to relief his mothers sorrow. He then recounts how those intense emotions are repeated, but this
time he feels for his father who suffers from sunstroke. His mother castigates him saying, "You all shouldve come home right away, mijo" ("mijo" is a Spanish contraction meaning "my
son" (Rivera 108). The next day, he will be in charge of his brothers and sisters working in the fields. She warns him "Dont overwork yourselves so much. Dont pay
any mind to the boss if he tries to rush you. Just dont do it. He thinks its so easy since hes not the one whos out there stooped" (Rivera
