a greater number of rituals in Hinduism and many different variations. At least, there are a number of practices within Yoga for instance and there are also many rituals equated
with death and dying. There are self-mortification practices for a particular sect that seems to take things to the extreme. Although most religions and traditions include ritualistic practices, Hinduism offers
a vast smorgasbord of practices and symbols which have meaning. There is almost a mystic feel and a connection with the universe as one delves into yoga, a practice that
connects the mind, body and soul. II. Yoga Types Yoga is a buzzword today but many people would be unfamiliar with yoga as it is aligned with spirituality
in Hinduism. There are many types of yoga within Hindu practice as well as outside of that realm. Yoga has become something commonplace in recent years--even in Western culture-- and
most people understand yoga as what is known in Hinduism as hatha yoga. That is, there are various postures that people engage in. It is seen as a form of
exercise in the west today and mainstream medicine has come to embrace it wholeheartedly. However, in addition to hatha yoga, there are many other types. It all started, at least
in Hinduism, with Krishna who suggested that the practice of a variety of yogas can help people to become liberated (Kessler, 2000). Something called Ptanjali yoga is important as it
is "a complex system involving the development of a virtuous life, mastering difficult postures and breathing exercises, and gaining gradual control of the senses and the mind" (Kessler, 2000, p.72).
Ptanjali has an eight limbed system and does include the practice of hatha yoga (Kessler, 2000). Bhakti yoga is a discipline equated with love ("Hinduism," 2005). Karma Yoga is a
