is the environment that is created and perpetuated, and is then interacted with. The cognized environment explains the different perceptions that are held regarding the community and the surroundings by
that society. The difference may manifest in different values and ethics and external rituals. One element that is present in all of the cultural are various rites of passage. This
term was first coined at the beginning of the twentieth century by Van Gennep (1960). It is seen as the passage from one stage to another stage, it can be
seen as a socialised recognition that may be a formal or an informal ritual that will have developed and evolved over time as a result of the cognized environment. When
considering the rites of passage it is interesting to note that in divergent cultures there will be similar stages, however, the ritual surrounding it will vary and will reflect the
social structures and exceptions of the society or community in which it takes place (Glaser and Strauss, 1971). Rites of passage can be traced back to the ancient civilisations
and primitive cultures (Weber, 1988). However, the same forms of ceremony may also be seen in modern society, with differing and divergent characteristics. If we consider some of these we
can start to understand the impact of the cognized environment. One rite of passage that can be seen as reflecting the environment
is the passage of an individual from the living worlds into death. If we look to the place of death there is evidence of these rites through artefacts, with indicates
