referred to as an "atypical antipsychotic agent" (Raber, 2006). There are two reasons for this classification, the first of which is that it is "chemically unrelated to the older antipsychotic
drugs" (Raber, 2006). The second reason is because this drug affects serotonin as well as dopamine (Raber, 2006). As an antipsychotic drug, the intended outcome is a decrease in disruptive
behaviors. It was originally prescribed for patients suffering from psychotic illnesses, like schizophrenia, but more recently, it has been prescribed to control behavior disorders in elderly persons suffering with such
conditions as Alzheimers (MedicineNet, Inc., 2005; Risperdal Side Effects, n.d.). It has also been prescribed to children who have autism (Troost et al, 2005; Risperdal Side Effects, n.d.).
A study conducted by Troost and colleagues (2005) investigated the long-term effects of the drug with autistic children. The study showed decreased levels of disruptive behavior in half the children
(Troost et al, 2005). The study also revealed only a few incidents of more serious side-effects, such as tremors, restlessness or muscle rigidity (Troost et al, 2005). In fact, there
were only one or two incidents of any of these three known side-effects (Troost et al, 2005). There are numerous side effects associated with this drug (Raber, 2006; MedicineNet, Inc.,
2005; Risperdal Side Effects, n.d.). The very long list includes gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting and a digestion problems (Raber, 2006; Risperdal Side Effects, n.d.). Rhinitis, or a runny
nose, is another side effect reported by about 10 percent of patients taking the drug (Raber, 2006). One study involving autistic children found the most common side-effects to be fatigue,
