Not only has the U.S. just been hit by the most destructive natural disaster in our nations history (on Katrina, the hurricane that virtually destroyed the
Mississippi/Louisiana Gulf Coast just two days ago and took still uncalculated numbers of human lives) we are now facing a gasoline price crisis that rivals anything in history. Gasoline prices
in the ravaged coastal areas have exceeded $6.00 a gallon and are already over $3.00 a gallon in much of the rest of the nation. Try as we might
it is difficult to explain why gasoline prices are so high. There are a variety of explanations being tossed about but it is hard not to suspect that the
explanations most commonly offered are really just overt attempts to cover up the more accurate reasons. Whatever the reason, soaring gas prices are having a profound effect on American
economy in general and on the middle class in particular. What are the most common explanations of the high gasoline prices we are
witnessing? First we placed the blame for these increases on our poor relationship with the oil producing nations of the world. Now we are placing a portion of
that blame on the damages that have been sustained in the recent hurricane by our domestic oil refineries. The media emphasizes every moment of the day, in fact, that
these are indeed the factors responsible for the outlandish prices that we are being forced to pay at the pump. We are flooded with film footage of irate Arabic
