Stephen E. Ambroses "The Rise to Globalism: American Foreign Policy Since 1938" is a concise review of American
foreign since pre-World War 2 to the present. While most history books delve into the intricate details of the most overt aspects of American foreign policy, Ambroses book encompasses
more events but fewer details. It is an excellent primer, however, on the full manifestations of American Foreign policy and our rather rapid ascent to globalism.
The first Chapter in "The Rise to Globalism" is titled "The Twisting Path to War". It details the state of world affairs in the
years leading up to World War II and delineates the expectations which were in place during that time period in regard to American involvement in world affairs. Ambrose relates
that in the social and political environment that resulted after World War I ended, there was probably even less chance of global peace than existed prior to the war.
When the treaties of World War I were signed the aftermath lingered on to have profound effects of future U.S., and indeed world, foreign policy.
The culmination of World War I left the World in an unstable socio-political status overall. The factors shaping U.S. foreign policy at this time in our history
were particularly complex. The United States was expected to police international justice and she could not. Great Britain and France were expected to mature into strong democracies and
band together with world powers to maintain the peace. They did not. Russia was expected to remain the subservient backward nation that she had been and Germany was
