This is a 5 page paper discussing the life and short stories of Ring Lardner. Ring Lardner (1885-1933) was a columnist and humorist who was well known for his “busher” stories which told of his years as a sports and baseball writer from 1905-1913. Even after he stopped touring with the teams, all based in the Michigan and Chicago areas, Lardner continued to write about the intimate details and distinct colloquial language used by the players in the professional leagues. Several themes within the stories reflect his own life including his love of music, baseball, Michigan and humor.

From the years 1905-1913, Ring Lardner was writing sports columns and short stories for a series of newspapers. Most of the columns and stories were based on the sport of
baseball and he spent a great deal of time touring and talking with the players. When he began to write for The Saturday Evening Post in 1914, naturally the content
of his stories were mainly baseball. Three of his short stories, "Horseshoes" (1914), "Harmony" (1915) and "My Roomy" (1914) all include intimate inside stories from the players from Lardners days
on the road and include many of the same patterns of speech, themes and similar characters. "Horseshoes" was first published in The Saturday Evening Post on August 15, 1914. The
story tells of an "inside" story behind the conflict of two players. The central player, an outfielder named Grimes, inadvertently begins to tell Lardner about his relationship with Speed Parker
who they had both known was sent to the hospital after the game that day. Grimes, not realizing the Lardner is a reporter, and Lardner not about to tell him,
tells Lardner about the past history he and Parker have had together. It seemed that they both grew up in the same town in Michigan and both went into professional
baseball but while it seemed that Grimes was constantly unlucky and couldnt get a break, Parker was constantly lucky and became far more successful than Grimes (Lardner, Horseshoes). Grimes only
