dangers on the see, told in a setting wherein a wedding party is taking place. It is something of a frightening tale and one that the Mariner must tell to
others in order to relieve his soul a bit. The following paper examines the possible thematic content of the poem. Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge As
with any story, be it a poem or a novel, there can be many themes within the text. In Coleridges poem one can well see that perhaps the theme is
as simple as a ghost story of sorts, a story to frighten people and to instill in them a fear and sense of the unknown. It is surely one of
those kind of tales as one can see in the following lines which speak of the dead bodies of the sailors: "Each corse lay flat, lifeless and flat,/ And, by
the holy rood !/ A man all light, a seraph-man,/ On every corse there stood" (Coleridge Part VI). In this one sees images of dead bodies, bodies of sailors that
have been on the ship with the Mariner. It is a dark and frightening image and there are many more within this particular poem. Aside from the possible theme being
nothing more than a ghost story to frighten a reader, it seems that there is a more powerful theme or message and that involves the Mariner and his role in
constantly telling his tale. His tale involves his killing, without any real reason, an albatross which is a bird, similar to a seagull. Ever since he killed that albatross his
life became dark and his soul in darkness and danger. He tells the tale of his journey on this particular ship, pointing out the frightening events, because he has to.
