"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" are always willing to risk lives and limbs for the preservation of people and ideals. These works form the basis for the concept
known as a righteous war. Quite simply, the concept of a righteous war rests within two principles. First, the reason for the war must be fought to satisfy
a specific moral purpose. Second, the way in which a war is fought also determines its righteousness. A monster such as Grendel in "Beowulf" that initiates wars merely
to inflict death and devastation is not fighting a righteous war. Is there really such a thing as a righteous war, or is this merely a notion authors and
poets contrived as a plot device? The ancient, anonymously written Sanskrit tale of Rama, entitled The Ramayana (translated and shortened for contemporary audiences by R.K. Narayan) asserts that according
to Hindu mythology there can indeed be righteous war that is fought within morally defined parameters. In Hindu, the term dharma yuddha is used to describe a just war.
Perhaps the best illustration of what a righteous war represents to the Indian people can be found in the description of the horse sacrifice contained within The Ramayana. According
to Narayans translation, in this ceremonial ritual, "A horse... is set free and trots at will through the frontiers of many kingdoms... but if at any point anyone attempts to
hold up the horse, it is taken as a challenge and causes a war" (18). In the horse sacrifice, warfare to retain the horse. What then commences is
that, "The original owner of the horse attacks the country where the horse is held and sets it free again, and again and again until it gets through and returns
