Gladiator. It is, as were its cinematic predecessors, a morality play, a classic (and oftentimes violent) battle between good and evil. For those unfamiliar with the films premise,
celebrated Roman General Maximus (Russell Crowe) has once again emerged victorious over the German army, but is war weary. He wants nothing more than to rejoin his wife and
son and live quietly as an ordinary farmer. However, Maximuss first and foremost responsibility is to Rome and when the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) expresses his desire
to transfer power to him, bypassing his son Commodus, Maximus has no choice but to accept despite his distaste for politics. Unbeknownst to Maximus, the conniving Commodus has been
plotting to take what he feels is rightfully his (the title of Emperor) and is responsible for his fathers death. When Commodus asks for Maximuss throne in order to
legitimize his shaky public support, Maximus refuses. This literally sets the stage for a blood bath. Commodus orders the execution of Maximus and his family and although the
warrior escapes, his family does not. The ailing and devastated Maximus is sold into slavery and eventually purchased by Proximo (Oliver Reeds final role) and is forced to compete
in gladiator matches at the Coliseum to entertain the carnage-crazed Roman spectators. Maximus may be down but he is certainly not out as he organizes a rebellion among his
fellow slaves, which will lead to a climactic showdown with the corrupt Commodus. Sounds like every other Roman epic Hollywood has ever produced, doesnt it? In terms
of historical accuracy, it certainly is as director Scott and screenwriter David Franzoni opt for adventure and excitement instead (Wilson 62). This massive production was not filmed on any
