Saddleback ahs close to 10,000 "core members" and over 50,000 people on its rolls (Byassee). In his book, The Purpose Driven Church, Warren offers readers the benefits of his considerable
insight and experience in order to discuss the reasons why so many of todays churches are failing to grow. Since this book was first published in 1995, it has served
"as a manual to thousands of other churches," as the model that Warren establishes with this volume has been utilized throughout the world to create a "whole new breed of
church" (Challies). Warren states that every church needs to be defined by a purposes. He writes, "Until you know what your church exists for, you have no foundation, no
motivation, and no direction for ministry" (Warren 81). In other words, without a clear definition, "a church is just drifting" (Challies). Warren stipulates that a churchs purpose statement should be
patterned in order to fulfill The Great Commission as laid down by scripture. Everything that the church undertakes should be considered in light of this purpose statement. Warren writes that
if a new program or ministry will address one of the purposes in the mission statement, "do it. If it doesnt, dont do it" (Warren 88). Furthermore, Warren argues that
any aspect of the church that is antithetical to the purposes of the church should be eradicated. Essentially, Challies points out that Warren feels that a church is rather like
a business, which means that church leaders should be cognizant of the needs and mindset of the unbeliever (Challies). Once a church as established its purpose, it is prepared
