War. While studying free-state politics, Richards relates his astonishment at finding out that some of the mot noteworthy California politicians of the antebellum were Southern sympathizers. He also uncovered other
remarkable facts about the Californias politics during this era, which caused the historian to set himself the goal of learning fully the ways in which Californias pro-slavery leanings contributed to
the history of the era and the cataclysmic conflict that erupted over the issue of slavery. Summary of the thesis Richards does not state his thesis overtly but it
is certainly implied and can be summed up in terms of demonstrating that California, and specifically the California gold rush, played an integral role in the sociopolitical atmosphere leading up
to the Civil War. In other words, Richards thesis is that the way in which Californias Civil War involvement has traditionally been presented is too simplistic and fails to indicate
the complexity of this era. Critique Leonard L. Richards is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts; however, he was educated at the University of California,
