Reston. Because Restons style is somewhat lighter than one might expect from a history (he refers to Philip leaving "in a pout" and Richards "frisky mood"), the play is less
serious than it might be. Discussion There are five principal characters: Isaac Comnenus, his servant Marcellus, Richard the Lion-heart, his fianc? Berengaria, and Richards personal chaplain, Nicholas. There is a
cast of thousands milling around offstage as well: soldiers, civilians and rascals of all sorts. SCENE ONE A beach near Limassol, Cyprus. A ship tosses on the
waves beyond the breakwater. The sea is rough though the day is sunny. Richard and Nicolas enter and Nicolas points to the ship. NICOLAS: There! RICHARD: I have eyes, you fool.
NICOLAS: Sorry, sire. RICHARD: How long? NICOLAS: Nine days, I believe. No, Im wrong. Ten days. Hes kept her out there for ten days. Not only that, but hes robbed several Crusader ships
on their way back from the Holy Land. RICHARD: He wants taking down a peg. Get a message to the popinjay and tell him that if he will allow the ladies
to land, return what he has stolen and make a suitable penance to God, well pass by and leave him in peace. If not, hell pay for his insolence.
(Nicolas stares at him.) RICHARD: Are you still here? (Nicolas bows and scurries off. Richard turns to the ship and puts his hands to his mouth to make a megaphone.) RICHARD: (bellowing)
