Branson commented that he never intended to be an entrepreneur, he wanted to be an editor or journalist "but I soon found I had to become an entrepreneur in order to keep my magazine going" (Linkage, Inc., 2004). That was a lesson in pragmatism at the tender age of 16 that has followed and that has been the foundation of Bransons success since (Linkage, Inc., 2004). In 1970, he and friend Nik Powell began a mail order discount records store (Woopidoo, 2005). That was his first venture under the name Virgin (Woopidoo, 2005). That led to opening a record store on Oxford Street in London, which was followed by beginning a record label, Virgin Records, in 1972 (Woopidoo, 2005). The first record from this new label, Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, stayed on the UK music charts for an astounding 247 weeks (Woopidoo, 2005). The label subsequently signed numerous top artists, like Genesis, The Rolling Stones, Culture Club and Simple Minds (Woopidoo, 2005; Linkage, Inc., 2004). Branson sold the label to THORN EMI for $1 billion US dollars (Woopidoo, 2005). The Virgin brand is one of the most recognizable brands in the world (Woopidoo, 2005). Branson began Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984, Virgin Mobile in 1999, released a book entitled, "Losing My Virginity: How Ive Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way," in 1999, and over the years opened Virgin Megastores internationally, Virgin Books, a publishing company, Virgin credit card, Virgin Trains in the UK, Virgin Holidays, Virgin Active, health clubs in the UK, V2 Music, another recording label, Vie cosmetics company, Virgin Cola, Virgin Bride, clothing lines, Ulusaba, a luxury preserve in South Africa, other personal finance ...
