(Goleman et al, 2002). When looking at three contemporary leaders; Richard Branson, Percy Barnevik and David Simon each may be seen as having a direct influence on their organizations
as the result of their leadership. There are commonalities in the way that they have undertaken there leadership, with similar values and practices that shaped the companies that they lead.
In all cases the leaders were not seeking to fully control their organizations, there were values of empowerment, with the belief that where employees are given the opportunities they
may be able to excel (Kets de Vries and Florent-Treacy, 1999). This is not just a way of enabling employees, in all cases the leaders see it as a necessary
part of the employee and organizational development as the organization are reliant on the employees in terms of their creativity and knowledge that is used by those employees for the
benefit of the firm. The concept of intellectual capital is at the core of this value of leadership. The role of leadership is therefore the model of a guider
and an inspiration, not a controller. The leadership role in all of the organization has been to provide a vision. This is a key role, and fits in with the
idea put forward by Zaleznik (1977) where leaders will have followers and Kotter (1990) argues that leaders will be visionaries, able to look forward and anticipate change and inspire and
motivate people. The role may be the same, but the way that individual leaders take on that role varies; Richard Branson is a highly visible leader, who had embraced
