to be the largest in the industry, Bransons philosophy is refreshing. Branson has always been an entrepreneur. When he was 16 years old, he published a magazine. He says
that he wanted to be a journalist or an editor but he could not find anyone else to publish his magazine. That set the course for Bransons life. His next
big venture was a mail order discount record store he began in 1970 with a friend, Nik Powell. They named the store Virgin. This led to a bricks-and-mortar store on
Oxford Street in London, which, in turn, led to Branson establishing a record label, Virgin Records in 1972. Their first record was a song named Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield,
which held its place on the music charts in the UK for 247 weeks. Other big names followed like Rolling Stones, Genesis, Culture Club and Simple Minds (biography.com, 2011). He
subsequently sold the label for $1 billion. The Virgin Group consists of more than 200 companies across the world. Among other businesses, Bransons Group has a cellular phone company,
a train company, megastores, clothing, an airline and even a space tourism company (biography.com, 2011). His success has been sporadic with some ventures wildly successful and others having volatile peaks
and valleys (biography.com, 2011). His leadership principles are: "people matter" and "small is beautiful" (de Vries and Treacy, 1999). He believes in shaping the company around the people, build
businesses rather than acquiring them, capture all ideas from everyone, and always be ready to change. Branson believes that the most important leadership quality is caring for people because this
brings out the best in them. He wants employees to be happy and looks for the best in each person (Challenge Consulting, 2009). Bransons leadership style is open and democratic.
