only ever written about myself, it is important that her life and her writing not be confused" (Page, 1997). We could say that about any author, particularly when he or
she writes in the first person; its easy, for instance, to confuse Edgar Allen Poe with his various narrators. But even a character based on the writer is still a
character, and there is some distance between the two. Page tells us that "Rhyss Dominican background is important to her works, playing a part in both her longer fictions
... and in short stories" (Page, 1997). She "identified with the Negro community in her childhood, and indeed throughout her life ... She envied the Negro community its vitality and
often contrasts the sterility of the white world with the richness and splendour of black life" (Page, 1997). Rhys was biracial; her mother was Creole and her father Welsh, and
though she identified strongly with the black community, she didnt feel truly at home in either culture. This constant tension between the two drives much of her work (Page, 1997).
In her story Let them call it jazz, Rhys "assumes the personality of Selina, a black West Indian in London, whose struggles parallel her own" (Page, 1997). It is told
in first person, from Selinas point of view, and paints a dreary picture of the life of a black woman in London, which is the setting. The plot is
simple: it tells of the hardships Selina faces because of the racism of her neighbors. She is robbed and when she cannot pay her rent, is turned onto the streets
