This paper discusses what organizations can do to help their best people get rewarded and their worst performers improve. Discussion Both rewarding good performers and helping struggling ones come
under the same heading: employee motivation. Its necessary to deal with employees at both ends of the spectrum, and for much the same reason. If employees consistently
do exceptional jobs and are not rewarded, they will become dissatisfied and leave; if poorer workers are not encouraged and brought up to the level of the others, the company
may be forced to let them go. In either case, the result is a company faced with replacing employees, which is a huge expense for any organization. Its so
true that its become a clich?: people dont work for money alone; even highly paid employees will leave if they feel underappreciated. While many organizations believe that giving
bonuses and raises will be enough, in reality its often more important to make sure employees understand the part they play in the companys success than it is to raise
their salaries. People want to feel that they are building a career, not just reporting each day to a job (Wiens). To that end, employers should make
sure that their employees "feel that they are an integral part of the organization" (Wiens). "Each individual should understand [the] firms mission and goals" and how their performance "impacts
the success of the firm" (Wiens). They should also be encouraged to "help determine how your organization defines success" (Wiens). That is, they should be able to work
with top management to determine the overall direction of the company so that they can fully contribute to it. This may not be possible in a very large organization,
