a US perspective typically we think of the US and French revolutions as typifying all revolution. Revolutions, however, dont always have a lot in common. Sometimes, in fact,
they vary tremendously both in the reasons behind them and in the particulars of the revolution. Revolutions, of course, often have
certain commonalties in regard to the societal problems which spawn them. They can also be quite different in regard to those problems. At the same time causative factors
in a revolution can occur instantaneously or over a much longer time frame. Likewise, revolutions can be a "flash in the pan" or long drawn-out affairs. Revolutions can
also vary according to the degree of the violence which is involved as well as the degree of change which occurs.
To lay the groundwork of our understanding of revolution it is appropriate to start with the revolution most of us know best, the American Revolution. The American Revolution marked
a change that would affect the world as a whole. The nation that would ultimately take her place as the worlds greatest superpower exerted her independence from Great Britain.
The focus of the American Revolution was to win political independence from Great Britain. It included a variety
of players ranging from the capitalist elite to the lower socioeconomic rung of our society. The more outstanding were men like Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.
