of the twentieth century. Europe, in particular, experienced one revolution after another. Some were successful while others were not. Many factors were at play in each, however.
Some of these factors were external while others were internal. The interplay which was created could be regarded, in fact, as a push/pull phenomena, a phenomena in which
internal forces pushing for change joined external forces pulling for change. This phenomena is particularly interesting in regard to East Germany and the revolution which swept the country in
1989. East Germanys revolution was, in many ways, similar to others occurring around it and even in more remote regions of the world.
Revolutions, after all, often have certain commonalties in regard to the societal problems which spawn them. They can also be quite different in regard to those problems.
At the same time causative factors in a revolution can occur instantaneously or over a much longer time frame. Likewise, revolutions can be a "flash in the pan" or
long drawn-out affairs. Revolutions can also vary according to the degree of the violence which is involved as well as the degree of change which occurs.
The revolution which would break out in East Germany in 1989 was, of course, integrally tied to her history. This country, like most
countries has undergone various phases in their political, economic, and societal development. Perhaps some of the most interesting of these phases occurred after World War II. East Germanys
fate after the war would be largely determined by external players. These players would pool their interest in East Germany in formats like the Teheran Conference and Yalta Conference.
