founding of the United States but to its ongoing development as a nation. Revolutionary ideas were particularly important components of this process between 1607 and 1808. It might be contended, in fact, that the moment that first ship from England landed on this continent with the intent of establishing a permanent settlement here (Jamestown) was the moment the American Revolution actually began. Those same revolutionary ideas hardly ended, however, even after the American Revolution itself. They continued to fuel our development through the presidency of Thomas Jefferson and on into 1808 when the United States finally issued a prohibition against the additional import of slaves into our country. There is considerable support for the contention that the setting for American independence was in place the moment the colonist arrived in the so-called "New World". There was never any hope, in fact, that Americans could gradually and peacefully develop independence within the British Commonwealth. Although Canada managed to do just that, Canadian ties with the mother country were very different from American ties. This fact relates to differences in climate, differences in geography, and differences in mindsets. The climate and geography of the region that would ultimately become the U.S. allowed the colonist to quickly develop an independence from Great Britain. They allowed for the establishment of independent communities that had little reliance on England in terms of either imports or exports. Never-the-less, our severing of ties with England was not, of course, immediate. The time lapse occurred between the initial colonization and revolution is explainable by the simple fact that at first we did need the support of an outside entity in order to survive. ...
