link between the dependant and the independent variables. In the article supplied by the student there is a study of the link between events which have given rise to security
concerns, the undertaking of different security projects and the views of European citizens on the risks they face1 When looking for a
paper where there is experimentation it is important to understand the reason why experimentation is undertaken and what it is able to prove or demonstrates. To understand this the concept
of dependant and independent variables needs to be understood. There are many different potential influences on any phenomena that is being examined and to consider these the variables need to
be defined and assessed as . independent or dependant variables. An independent variable may also be called the predictor variable, this is the variable that is thought to be responsible
for any changes, the variable that is changing, and which the research is seeking to explain is known as the dependant variable (Dancey and Reidy, 2002).
Experimentation allows for the relationship between the dependant and the independent variable to be measured by changing or altering the independent variable and observing the
impact it has ion the dependable variable. In the article provided by the student a review of the experimentation is meant to
be performed looking at the data supplied. However, looking at the article supplied, it does not appear to be an article reporting on research using experimentation, instead it is more
descriptive research. Yin (1993) divides this into three main types those of exploratory, explanatory and descriptive. Descriptive cases are where there the starting point has a descriptive theory which describes
