the University of Liverpool; John Ellershaw works through the Liverpool Marie Crie Cancer Center; and both Christopher Holcombe and Peter Salmon provided research support through the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
This study outlines the views of a population of patients, and relates the findings of interviews which are the
basis for their qualitative methodology. The analysis presented by the authors in regards to the patient responses demonstrates the correlation between the study outcomes and the value of
the outcomes to inform patient practices in nursing. Funding sources were not provided in the acknowledgement section. Problem The problem outlined
by Byrne et al (2002) is that individuals who are told they have cancer respond very differently to the information. In the curative/carative relationship, understanding the psychological needs of
the patient, then, is an important component of the role of nursing professionals. In correlation, emerging nursing theories suggest that the attitudes and communications of individuals with cancer can
