Authors Armistead and Machin (1997) present a study focusing on "the concepts of business processes and business process management" (p. 886). In their report on the study, they define business process management and provide information on organizational structuring for optimum control and effective use of in-place business processes. The authors concede that there "is a resonance from operations management into business process reengineering (BPR)" (Armistead and Machin, 1997; p. 886), but also assert that there is far more to business process management than only applying operations management principles to paper and information flow. The authors explain that business processes collectively constitute a collection of interrelated business activities that cross organizational boundaries and gain significant attention within the organization operating under the philosophy of total quality management (TQM). TQM often is viewed only as a set of approaches to operational issues, but underlying the activities of TQM is the philosophy that both causes and allows TQM to be of benefit to organizations of all types. The authors conducted a qualitative survey of four large companies, all known for their dedication to quality and all of which had been recognized for it. The authors found that at each, culture was as an important aspect of business process management as was managing the flow of information throughout the organization. The authors conclude that organizations need to apply "concepts such as TQM, lean production and supply and agile manufacturing" (Armistead and Machin, 1997; p. 886) to all aspects of their business, not only to operations management.
