Kempis (1380-1471). Born near Dusseldorf, Germany, Thomas received his call to God early, following his schooling in Deventer, the Netherlands. At the age of 33 (the same age
as Christ at the time of his crucifixion), Thomas entered the priesthood. Extremely devout, Thomas was drawn to the mystical aspects of Christianity, and at the Canon of St.
Augustine Monastery, his days were spent meditating and writing religious texts. From his earlier work as a copyist, Thomas had memorized the New Testament of the Bible. But
what influenced him more than any single scripture was the life of Christ; he believed the only way individuals could accurately relate the teachings of Jesus Christ to their own
life experiences was to follow in his own spiritual footsteps. This inspired Thomas to write The Imitation of Christ, which was first published anonymously in 1418, and has become
