American and thus gave a new understanding to many in times when African Americans were heavily oppressed. In his autobiography The Measure of a Man Poitier examines some aspects of
his life. The following paper offers a review of the book. Review of Sidney Poitiers The Measure of a Man Apparently
Poitier has written more than this book in relationship to his life and his involvement in many areas of society and in Hollywood. In this particular book, therefore, he does
not address all aspects, events or introspections on his life. This work, as he mentions, is one that seeks to understand if he was living up to ideals he had
in relationship to how a man should measure up, how noble and ethical a man should be. He is using this work to examine, and present to the reader, his
own contemplations, his experiences, and his thoughts about his spiritual and moral journey. He begins this examination back when he was younger and incapable of reading.
In the beginning of the work he illustrates how he wanted to be more and some man told him to go be a dishwasher (which is what
Poitier was at the time): "His assessment was like a death sentence for my soul....If he didnt know, what was it about me that implied to this stranger that dishwashing
would accurately sum up my whole lifes worth?" (Poitier, 2000; 57). He was determined to be more, determined to be an actor and he worked and struggled through many realities,
