the way in which the Middle East has developed. The Middle East is an interesting area; the economic development has been exhilarated by the natural resources in the area including
oil and gas. However, there is a contradiction in the way that the economic development has taken place; while the area is rich when measured in terms of the per
capita income, or the GDP per capita, in developmental terms many countries within the middle east of falling behind other developing regions. This is particularly true when looking at areas
such as South East Asia and Latin America. With an area that is very rich, and in many cases the hydrocarbon industries are controlled by the state, the problems in
terms of economic disadvantage and disparity between different parts of the population may be seen as conundrum. One of the main aims
of the book and Wilsons approach to the subject is to try and answer some of the questions that arise from this apparent contradiction of wealth and development. Also tries
to put forward a number of models arguments that are needed to understand the development of the region and are necessary when considering arguments that explain its development. Other questions
tackled in the book include issues such as the role of religion in the area which is strongly Islamic and whether or not there is a clash between economic development
and Islamic values. The argument and debate that are considered within the book, and the economic theory that underpins it, is not new.
