There are many studies that are less than ideal in design, execution, analysis or other features. Polit, Beck and Hungler (2002) provide
a series of points useful in assessing all components of a research article. Those guidelines are used here to critique "Predicting Family Health in Families of Young Adults with
Severe Mental Illness" (Doombos, 2002). Literature Review The author of this study includes five sections in the literature review. Those sections are
(1) family perception of client symptomatology; (2) time since diagnosis of mental illness; (3) family coping; (4) family stressors; and (5) family health. The author develops ideas within each
category and points to ways that each can contribute to the larger issue under study. Each of these topics is supported with a
review of studies falling within each category, and sources are of the caliber that can be seen as being reliable, and for the most part, peer-reviewed. Most of the
sources used are current within the past decade. Only a few of the sources used were published prior to the early 1990s, and they support the authors stance that
new research is needed in the area. The style of the literature review is appropriate in that the author divides it into well-defined
sections, each of which is separate from the others both organizationally and in content. There are only rare quotes from these sources; the author has paraphrased all those used
