within. They are stories that bring to life, through personal experience, what it was like to be a slave. They are all relatively different stories because everyones experiences and perceptions
are different. But, they are incredibly intriguing, educational, and enlightening. One such story is Harriet Jacobs which is titled Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. This is the
true story of a woman, who uses a fictional name to represent herself, about her life as a slave. She takes the reader from her innocent youth, and a happy
beginning, to her struggles and hardships as an adult. The following paper offers up a book review of her story. Review of Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life
of a Slave Girl In the very beginning of her work the author notes, in the preface, "Reader be assured this narrative is no fiction. I am aware that some
of my adventures may seem incredible; but they are, nevertheless, strictly true. I have not exaggerated the wrongs inflicted by Slavery; on the contrary, my descriptions fall far short of
the facts" (Jacobs). What she means by falling short involves the fact that she is protecting people, perhaps being kind, in not putting in the real names of people within
her story and by not putting in the names of locations either. Other than that her story is true. This is further documented in the end of the book with
reliable accounts from reliable individuals. It is a very powerful story that often feels as though it were truly fictional because it is so filled with dangers and
struggles. The story begins with Linda, Harriets fictional name, living with her parents, which was something that many slaves did not experience. Apparently they are relatively comfortable as slaves, in
