H.W. Brands, The First American: The Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, is an inspiring tribute to Franklin. This book highlights the multiplicity of Franklins talents and contributions,
and brings to life the charisma and character that defined Franklin himself. Brands contends that Franklin was at the very epicenter of many of the remarkable changes that were
occurring in the 18th century, and that Franklins contributions were integral to the formation of the United States. Brands points out how Franklin
was quite older than those men who we today consider to be the founding fathers of our country, such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, etc. In this
way then, Franklin was a man ahead of his time according to Brands. He was a man who worked diligently to establish many of the ideals and values that
would become the battle cry of the next generation. Brands cannot extol the virtue of Franklin enough, contending that it above all others, it was Franklin who made American
independence even possible. Understanding Franklins historic role as a reluctant American is singularly valuable in understanding the nascent American citizenry as a whole -- they were not
all fire breathing radicals like Samuel Adams (Review of Brands, "The First American, 2004). And
yet, one of Brands strengths is that he doesnt feel the need to paint an unrealistically ideal picture of Franklin in order to pay tribute to him. He offers
