Mohandas K Gandhi was one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century, not
only in his native country of India but on an international level. In order to understand how he became such a major figure on the world stage, and what rendered
his personality and political methodology different from that of other international leaders, it is useful to explore some of the factors which influenced his own background and upbringing.
He was born in India, and his parents followed the Jain religion,
which practises non-violence. From the earliest age, therefore, he was taught to seek solutions to conflicts which did not involve violence and to search for peaceful resolutions. Although, like most
youngsters, he rebelled against some aspects of his parents teaching (he experimented with eating meat, for instance, which is forbidden in Jainism) it is evident that the basic principles of
the faith had a salient influence on him throughout his adult life.
He studied law in London, a period in his life which again had a significant impact on his later socio-political career. His studies introduced him to the British principles of
fairness and justice, which coincided well with his existing beliefs, and it seems clear that while he was studying for the Bar, he encountered little prejudice on the basis of
