are perhaps no other women as notorious in the history of modern dance in this country. Born near the end of the 19th century her life was filled with great
achievement and success. The following paper examines the life and dance of Doris Humphrey through various literature. Doris Humphrey "Doris Humphrey was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in
1895 and grew up in Chicago. Her father operated a residence home for vaudeville performers called the Palace Hotel, and her mother offered piano lessons" (Chapter 2: The Solo Dancers,
2004). While she was a young girl Doris studied the piano as well as "ballet, ballroom dance, Americanized Delsarte and Dalcrozes system of Eurythmics. A talented dancer, she began teaching
ballet and interpretive dance to children when she was 15" (Chapter 2: The Solo Dancers, 2004). Over the next few years she traveled on the railroad with a troupe
of variety players, "giving performances to railroad employees of her home-made aesthetic dances and Spanish numbers. When she returned home to Oak Park she began her own studio with her
mother as accompaniest and business manager" (Chapter 2: The Solo Dancers, 2004). However, her dreams and her creativity did not allow her to be content with the mid West,
as is further seen in the following: "Welcome as it was, however, this very success meant that young Doris was trapped in a teaching routine for four important years of
her life as a developing dancer. Only in 1917, when she was confident that the schools income would be sufficient for her parents needs, did she decide that she could
honorably leave Illinois to enter the Los Angeles Denishawn School. There she found a new vision of dance and technique to inspire her classes when she returned to Oak Park"
