Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page analysis of a book review. Neila C. Seshachari’s review of a scholarly book of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s famous short story “The Yellow Wall-paper” edited by Julie Bates Dock offers a concise, lucid summation of this text. Seshachari begins by explaining why this book is significant, which is, in part, due to the fact that is offers the first authoritative text of Gilman’s famous work to be published since the short story’s original publication in 1892, but the reviewer also argues that this text is significant because of its essays and scholarship, which offers a thorough examination of the story’s publication, history and its place within feminist literature. insight into how such a classic can be taught successfully (Seshachari 114). Also, the reviewer summarizes other points of interest in the book, such as the fact that he chapter
entitled "The Legend of The Yellow Wall-Paper" relates how the period in which the story was left unread, prior to it being discovered by feminist scholars, resulted in various "blemishes
and distortions," which have served to distort the connotation of Gilmans prose in specific instances (Seshachari 114). For example, Dock argues persuasively that the omission of the phrase "in
marriage" distorts the meaning of the sentence "John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that [in marriage]" (Seshachari 115). As "The Yellow Wall-Paper" has been heavily interpreted by
feminist critics and viewed as a polemic against men, as well as marriage, Docks point is most persuasive. The text also contains numerous photographs that help students visualize the
people who are instrumental in the book, such as Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, who was Gilmans personal physician. Gilman underwent treatment while under Mitchells care that was quite similar to
