theme of this novel is the so-called "Lost Generation" and the world they live in. The term refers to the young people who fought in World War I, a struggle
that was both horrific and almost totally pointless. The survivors of the misery of trench warfare were forever changed, because the First World War was unlike any that had been
fought before. Opposing armies battled back and forth over a few yards of ground for months; all sides used poison gas; and tens of thousands of people died in a
day. The people who came through the war seemed to drift, lost in a sort of no-mans land as deadly as any that existed on the battlefield. They had no
purpose and no goals, perhaps because the world itself no longer made sense. This is the society that Hemingway examines in this novel. Its also easy for a reader to
confuse Hemingway with his protagonist, Jake Barnes, because they share many similarities. They both drove ambulances in the war, they both lived in Europe for many years, and they both
loved the bullfight, which is the central metaphor of the book. However, its reading too much into the situation to say that Hemingway and Barnes are the same person. What
is clear is that Hemingways experiences make Barnes seem very real. So does Hemingways famous "reportorial" style of writing, which renders his prose direct and clipped, much the same style
that journalists use for newspaper articles. Its very distinctive and people either love it or cant stand it. It does have the effect of making the story seem "immediate," as
if were reading about something thats happening right now. As to the story itself, its not so much a story as a "snapshot" of a time and the people who
