do not feel they have a right to sexual relations, or they feel they are no longer seen as sexual creatures, although it is a very basic element of being
human. These are issues discussed in Sexuality and the Chronically Ill Older Adult by Verna C. Pangman and Marilyn Sequire. The following paper offers up a review of this article.
Review: Sexuality and Older Adults The article primarily focuses on the information that is available concerning the elderly, the chronically ill elderly, and sexuality. The article illustrates how
there is really very little done for the elderly in relationship to discussing or understanding sexuality. They are essentially an ignored portion of society in many respects. The authors note,
for example, how "Because sexuality is so closely identified with youthfulness, the stereotype of sexless older adults who are frail and inactive is a widely held belief" (Pangman; Sequire, 2000;
49-50). This has put the elderly in a position of invisibility to a large extent. The authors are primarily, it seems, aiming at illustrating how the nursing profession is
a very important profession to address the issues, problems, or concerns of the elderly. The authors illustrate that, according to research and data, not only has society long held onto
the negative beliefs associated with the elderly and sexuality but that health care professionals have also held onto such perspectives and thus likely perpetuated a myth that ultimately affects the
