on an old and very workable premise: the idea of the "fish out of water." The very first line tells readers that the narrator is in a strange situation: "I
might as well say, right from the jump: it wasnt my usual kind of job" (Brooks 3). An astute reader will also form an impression of the narrators character by
the end of the next line: "I like to work alone, in my own clean, silent, well-lit laboratory where the climate is controlled and everything I need is right at
hand" (Brooks 3). Its obvious immediately that the narrator, a character named Hanna Heath, is as controlled as her environment, that she likes to have things readily available, and that
taking her away from her lab in Sydney is taking her very far out of her comfort zone indeed. She reveals that it was a 2 a.m. phone call
that got her on a plane to Bosnia, one of those places "that are datelines in war correspondents dispatches" (Brooks 6). She is nervous about being in a war zone
and uncertain of herself, which makes her a very compelling character. Brooks has a good eye for detail and an acerbic wit, noting that the flight attendant had "one of
those big, perfect German smiles" and referring to her a few lines later as Fraulein Smiley-Face (Brooks 6). Brooks use of language is deft and fun to read. But the
most compelling thing about the book is the book-the reason Hanna got on a plane to Bosnia in the first place: the Sarajevo Haggadah, which she describes as "one of
