of children attending New York City schools who have asthma but oftentimes, their symptoms are not recognized. To address the problem a joint program comprised of the New York City
Department of Education and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was initiated. One goal was to have primary care physicians spend more time addressing this problem
with children, parents and schools. It was a large study of nearly 600 children in grades kindergarten through grade 5 along with their parents or other caregivers. Each child had
been diagnosed with asthma and/or they had "symptoms of persistent asthma" (Bruzzese et al, 2006, p. 307) as defined by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The intervention
consisted of training the school health team to help children manage their symptoms. Physicians and nurses then worked with primary care physicians and families with the goal of helping children.
Unfortunately, the program did not succeed. Data reveal there was no change in the way primary care physicians handled these children, their patients. There were very few improvements in the
health of the children. This is absolutely tragic. Asthma is obviously a problem of significant concern in this area but physicians changed nothing even after receiving additional material and meetings
with the other physician/nurse team. One does not want to think that physicians think they know so much they dont need any more information. The researchers did say that at
