was if two entrance candidates were equally qualified on all levels, yet one was a minority and the other was white, the minority would automatically be accepted. There have
been times, however, when an underqualified minority wins out over a qualified white male just to meet the necessary quota. "Blacks can come into Berkeley with 900. Why
is he going to develop merit? Hed be an idiot to develop merit. I wouldnt" (Anonymous, 1996, 13A). The reasoning behind this was that other races were
viewed as getting the short end of the stick if they had to compete against Caucasians. However, the preference that has been given to minority groups has considerably backfired,
creating an unfavorable climate of white male prejudice (Chang 1997). Reverse discrimination lies at the core of Supreme Court case Regents of University of California v. Bakke (1978), where Allan
Bakke was denied application for admission to the University of California at Davis School of Medicine. Claiming that this denial violated both the Constitution and Title VI of the
1964 Civil Rights Act, the Supreme Court set a precedence with regard to quotas in academic institutions. There is no question that the original intent of affirmative action was
to empower minority groups with the legal support they needed as a means by which to overcome educational shortcomings; however, history has clearly proven the fact that affirmative actions quest
