Revenge is a common element in many tales of horror. No author, however, has ever been able to surpass Edgar
Allan Poe in his or her ability to use revenge to formulate a plot and setting. Just the mention of the name Edgar Allan Poe often brings shivers of
anticipation to those that enjoy immersing themselves in horror stories. Indeed, although Poe has been dead over one-hundred and fifty years he will live on into perpetuity as the
greatest horror story author to have ever lived (Readers Companion to American History). Not only does much of Poes work illustrate his preoccupation with death, disfigurement, and the darker
aspects of the universe, so too was he preoccupied with the theme of revenge. Revenge is, in fact, one of the basic elements of the deep emotion which characterizes
Poes work. "The Cask of Amontillado" demonstrates this fact better than an of his other works. In analyzing Poes us of revenge
in this tale, three distinct points can be made. The first of these points is that fact that while revenge is an ever-present element in "The Cask of
Amontillado", Poe manages to keep it just below the surface of the plot until that final moment when his true intent is unleashed. In many respects Poe is a much
an expert at this type of utilization as he is in the more jarringly apparent aspects of horror which periodically punctuate his work. In many ways, perhaps, this the
