that were of divine origin. These revelations were brought to him from Allah by the archangel Gabriel and because of this experience Muhammad rejected the polytheistic religion of his fellow
Arabs (Handloff, 2002). The following discussion examines the revelation of the Prophet, as it is manifested in the Quran, the Islamic Holy Book and how this is a revelation of
spiritual truth. Muhammads true vocation in life came relatively late, as he was about forty when his revelations began to occur (Gabrieli, 1968). He was married to an
older woman, a Meccan widow, Khadija, who remains the most "sympathetic feminine figure in the Prophets biography" (Gabrieli, 1968, p. 48). His first revelation occurred during an occasion when
he had retired to pray and meditate in a cave on Mount Hira, outside of Mecca. During this meditation, Muhammad was visited by a "supernatural being," whom he later
identified as the Angel Gabriel (Gabrieli, 1968). Gabriel commanded Muhammad to recite a sacred text, "in praise and gratitude to God the creator" (Gabrieli, 1968, p. 49). This was but
the first of many revelations that were made known to Muhammad over the course of a period of roughly twenty years. The context of these revelations provides the basis
for the Quran. Why the revelations of Allahs wisdom was spread out over such a long period of time can only be speculated upon (Anonymous, 2002). Perhaps it was
done in this manner so that the Prophet could have a continuing source of inspiration to ease his tremendous burden during these long years. Or, perhaps, it was so that
the laws of Allah could be instituted gradually, giving the people time to learn, comprehend and adjust to the changes that inspirational verses brought to Arab life (Anonymous, 2002).
