mother Gertrude, as well as his inner battles. Discussion In general, all literature, especially dramatic literature, centers on conflict, because without conflict there is no drama. No one enjoys reading
about, or watching, people who get along beautifully; there is nothing there to hold ones attention. But people who are squabbling, or having marital difficulties, or plotting against each other,
are very interesting. In Hamlet, conflict seems to be taken to an extreme, as the young prince has to deal with the death of his father, his mothers quick remarriage
and his own doubts about the situation all within a very short time. This paper argues that Hamlet, far from being indecisive, is instead carefully assembling the evidence he needs
before takes the law into his own hands. This is supported by his conversation with the Ghost, which he does not immediately take as accurate; by his use of the
Players to confirm his doubts; and by his refusal to kill Claudius as he prays. These incidents all speak to Hamlet as being a careful and methodical man, but not
an indecisive one. Lets begin with some background. The first thing we notice is that important information is missing. We know that Hamlets affection for his father is very close
to hero-worship; he loves the man with the same degree of loathing that he feels for his fathers brother. What we dont know is why Hamlet loves one brother but
hates the other with such virulence. That question is never answered in the play, and yet it seems to be the foundation of the entire structure. We may "connect the
dots" and make some assumptions, based on Hamlets hate and the fact that his mother married his uncle so quickly, and that assumption is that Gertrude and Claudius were lovers
