where he sees Max Bolger, the husband of the woman with whom he had an affair. The affair with Beth Bolger had happened in St. Louis. The man seems to
excuse it on the basis that anything that happens outside New York are unreal. Ford does not provide the reader with a chronological historical account of the details of
the affair. Rather, he presents a jumble of thoughts such as a person might really think when seeing a person who brings back memories of some event, whether the event
was happy or otherwise. Johnny says several times, in one way or another, "What went on between Beth Bolger and me is hardly worth the words that would be required
to explain it away" (Ford, 2009). Yet, he continues in his meandering thoughts in such a way as to try to explain it or at least report it. He explains
the affair as "an ordinary adultery-spirited, thrilling, and then, after a brief while, . . . it became disappointing and ignoble" (Ford, 2009). Eventually, the husband finds out and confronts
the pair in a hotel room. He does what one would expect, he beats up the man who winds up at an airport waiting for hours for the next flight
home. That ended their affair and the couple saw each other only one more time, for "one sorrowful and bitter drink" (Ford, 2009). Both were nervous during that meeting but
as many lovers whose affair has been broken up suddenly, they seemed to have a need for some kind of closure. That is usually the reason for those kinds of
extremely uncomfortable meetings. Ford could have had the pair meet accidentally as so often happens in other stories or he could have had them be at ease during that meeting
