as a result of a return to school. The paper argues that education is worth the disruption and discomfort that might occur. Discussion Students may perhaps take a year or
two off to travel or gain some work experience and then return to school with little stress, but for older adults the process may be very difficult. They may already
be established in a career, with a family and children of their own, and a major change of this kind raises significant issues. Among these are the fear that being
older than most of the students they wont "fit in"; that the school will prove to be too expensive; that they wont have time to work and attend class; that
it will take a long time to get a degree; that their employer wont appreciate their efforts or think of the certification or degree as "credible"; or that the "coursework
wont be valuable or useful" (McAllister, 2007). Three changes that occur when an adult goes back to school include the effect on a "normal" schedule; the lack of family time;
and the problems adjusting to being back in class with students much younger. In the first instance, well assume that the adult has already established a career of some
sort and has a full-time, permanent job; in some cases, perhaps a stressful occupation. In addition to working a 40-hour (or quite possibly longer) week, the person now has the
added burden of finding time to take classes. Not only that, but even if the classes are on-line, there will be preparation, homework, and some amount of discussion. Classwork and
the preparation for it cannot be done at work, so the student will have to do it at home. This brings us to the second point, that returning to school
