team during the war, I put aside my own goals and objectives for the service of my country. I rarely thought of my options or the possibilities that would
present themselves when I returned to civilian life. Im now facing the very real challenges after being discharged from the military, and have begun to set my own educational
and career goals. The military trains us to set aside our own expectations and goals to be a part of a larger mechanism, a military team. Our
dependence on those with whom we serve creates a level of cohesiveness and a sense of belonging that is essential to the goals of military action. In many ways,
becoming a part of the military means that for a short time, we must give up our singular vision of our self and focus instead on our obligation to our
country and to others. Surprisingly, one of the hardest parts about being in the military has been the transition back to civilian life. After serving in the
military for two years, return to "normal" daily life has been challenging. Adjusting to simple things, including an unstructured daily schedule and the pressure to make choices about
the future are elements that are unexpectedly difficult. My decision to pursue the continuation of my education came after considerable reflection and the emerging belief that my military experience
is just the first step in the training I need to become a productive member of society. Though Ive recognized the value of pursuing my education, Ive also
realized that I havent participated in formal education outside of military coursework for four years. When I entered the military, I had not pursued post-secondary education, though I
