McVeigh learned about firearms as a child, and later entered the military, where he was decorated for his service and his marksmanship (Linder, 2006). McVeigh voiced opposition
to taxation and governmental control over the right to bear arms. McVeigh opposed the government siege of the Waco compound of the Branch Davidians in Mount Carmel, Texas (Ottley,

Fortier met McVeigh while in basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia (Ottley, 2000). The Fortiers held similar beliefs as Nichols and McVeigh and believed in the need for retaliation
