adjustment to retirement are identified and discussed. Within the literature on this topic, good health is frequently mentioned as the most significant factor influencing life satisfaction, as research has
shown self-rated health assessments to be positively correlated with decreased morbidity, particularly in regards to men (Lowis, Edwards and Burton, 2009). However, socio-cultural factors also play a role in life
satisfaction in retirement as several studies have connected successful aging with continued engagement in activities that are both social and productive (Lowis, Edwards and Burton, 2009). A prominent factor in
life satisfaction for the elderly is the perception by the individual that he or she is a primary causal agent in determining personal history and the obtainment of the social
reinforces that the individual values, that is, that the individual has an "internal locus of control (LOC)" (Lowis, Edwards and Burton, 2009, p. 429). It has been theorized that when
elderly people enter into residential care, they suffer a loss of LOC that causes reduction in life satisfaction. Having a sense of control over their lives has been described in
research as the "most important predictor of mortality, morbidity and well-being in adulthood" (Lowis, Edwards and Burton, 2009, p. 430). The study conducted by Reitzes and Mutran (2004) followed
a group of retirees from pre-retirement to 24 months post-retirement with the purpose of investigating the stages of retirement and the impact of social background, gender and social psychological factors
