Essay / Research Paper Abstract

7 pages. Biometrics is the use of physical characteristics to identify a person. This rapidly emerging technology is becoming more common as security measures are taken to a new level. Retinal scan biometrics uses iris recognition to identify the pattern of the iris that is as unique to each individual as are fingerprints. This outstanding research paper gives a detailed narrative of the emerging field of retinal scan biometrics. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

This research paper gives a detailed narrative of the emerging field of retinal scan biometrics. WHAT IS RETINAL SCAN BIOMETRICS? Using iris identification of people in security technology is becoming more prevalent than most people realize. Because the iris has a unique pattern in each individual it is as reliable as a fingerprint, and in many cases even more so. The iris is sometimes extolled as the "Living Password because of "unique, random features" (Baird, 2002, 18) and is now known to be a better identifier of an individual than is a fingerprint. The iris, the colored ring that is around the pupil of the eye, does not change over the course of a persons lifetime and gives "easily visible yet complex and distinct combinations" (Baird, 2002, 18) of the makeup of the corona of the eye. "The results of a comprehensive study conducted by Britains National Physical Laboratory (NPL) showed that iris recognition technology decisively outperformed six other biometrics systems -- facial recognition, fingerprint, hand geometry, vein, and voice recognition -- on accuracy and speed of identification. Iris recognition technology can be used for physical access security, information security, and a variety of walk-up applications" (Baird, 2002, 18). Using a low level infrared light a picture can be taken of the retina of the eye. This infrared light then reflects back to the camera the distinctive patterns making up the corneal area of the individuals eye. THE HISTORY OF RETINAL SCAN BIOMETRICS The technology of iris recognition was the brainstorm of Leonard Flom and Aran Safir. These two ophthalmologists working with the company IriScan in New Jersey first determined ...
