illegal nature of drugs and due to the behavior of drug users. As such there has long been what is known as the War on Drugs. It is a war
that was started in an effort to stop the use of illegal drugs in the United States. While perhaps an idea that was based on good intentions, it is not
an idea that has worked, nor will it work. The following paper argues that the nation really needs to rethink the War on Drugs. Rethinking the War on
Drugs The War on Drugs was essentially implemented to deter people from purchasing, selling and using drugs. These drugs range from marijuana to very serious drugs such as heroin. Any
drug that is illegal is put into the category of "drug." This war has ultimately put many people in prison for many years. It has cost the taxpayers a great
deal of money in searching out and apprehending and housing the drug criminals. It has overcrowded the prison system in the nation and it has proved to doing more than
create more problems for the nation. In one respect, people who purchase, sell or use marijuana are put in prison and exposed to a reality that will likely damage
them forever. Marijuana users are not individuals who are criminals. In truth every type of person, from all walks of life, use marijuana and yet they are treated as harshly
as criminals who rape or kill people. And, putting people in prison for marijuana has not stopped people from smoking marijuana. It is argued that this is done so that
