wine connoisseurs are well acquainted with each other. Take Montresor, for example. He always struck me as rather hot-tempered and self-important, believing his knowledge of Italian vintages is
superior to everyone elses. As much a student of human nature as I am about the grape, I suspect Montresors pompousness is related to his feelings of insecurity.
He always feels compelled to protect his family name from any slight whether real or imagined. I can remember him confiding once to me, "I must not only punish,
but punish with impunity" (Poe). I always wondered to whom he was referring; I can only speculate it must have been Fortunato, despite their public appearance as friendly rivals.
Fortunato, as his name meaning "good fortune" implies, had an unparalleled local reputation. In fact, it has been said he "was a man to be respected and even
feared" (Poe). I never understood this because, like Montresor, most of Fortunatos so-called knowledge of wine was more an extension of his ego than of his intellect. He
often drank to excess especially at carnival time - when all of the locals were more uninhibited and carefree than usual - and his attire was a bit gaudy for
a man of his social position. I have long suspected that Montresor and Fortunato were jealous of my wine collection and competed against each other to outdo mine.
Unbeknownst to them, I observed the two men having a seemingly innocuous discussion about a pipe of Amontillado. Montresor confessed to Fortunato that he was worried he may have
