and film series. This is apparently the case. Last year, the fifth book in the series, Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, was released. This year, the third
movie, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, will be released. Next year, by rights, the sixth book should come out. With so much happening with Harry Potter, its not
surprising to find a current advertising program running in almost every media. The success of early books and movies could be attributed to word of mouth, but with the lag
time between book and movie releases, advertising will determine its continued success. There is no lack of advertising. For example, a search in
msn under "Harry Potter" on April 20, 2004 will return 519 hits and 5 sidebar ads. Even if all returns are not advertisements, the sheer number of returns on the
msn search act as advertisements, and the student may want to argue that this includes soft advertising, like the "Harry Potter Lexicon" site, which promises to teach browsers the name
of Potter beasts and magical spells. This search will also turn up publicity sites, such as the CNN.com site reporting on the 2003 cache of The Order of Phoenix found
in a British field weeks before the books release (msn, 2004). Both of the above hits are sandwiched in between the ads
on the first page of the search, listing 20 hits. Every internet bookstore and DVD point-of-sale dealer has a Harry Potter ad running. Book price for Harry Potter and The
Prisoner of Azkaban at Barnes & Noble: $9.99. Barnes & Noble also lists a Harry Potter calendar for $12.99, among other items for sale (Barnes & Noble, 2003).
